Montgomery County Historical Markers
NUMBER OF MARKERS- 77
Have -67 Need- 10
Conroe is the county seat of Montgomery county and the county is named after the town of Montgomery, Alabama.
Being so close to Houston the population has grown rapidly in the last decade, and Conroe seems to be merely another suburb of Houston to me. Outside of this, Montgomery county has a more rural feel. Sam Houston National Forest is in this county and very pretty to drive through. Lake Conroe is also very popular with tourists and residents alike. The towns of Montgomery and Magnolia have cute shops and interesting downtown areas. That I have yet to explore as fully as I would like. Our first visit to Montgomery county we were free styling, that is we visited without knowing where the markers were. We occasionally did this in the beginning of our hobby, much less so now as it invariably means we will have to return to capture the ones we missed. The Texas Historical Marker Guide app on my I-phone has considerably helped to avoid doing this. In the case of Montgomery county knowing where the markers are supposed to be only helped so much. This is been probably one of the most confusing counties so far, consisting of missing markers, private property, baffling directions and a marker that was never actually placed at all. The markers for Crater Hill and Conroe Oil Field have been confirmed missing. We also looked for the Telegraph Road marker without success. I have emailed Montgomery county to see if there were any plans to reinstate the missing markers but have yet to hear back. Gertie Spencer former chairperson, was extremely helpful with my very long list of complicated questions. In Montgomery the site of the Methodist Church includes the Old Cemetery and parsonage. There are a combination of state approved and regular markers making at least six that I know of. |
I believe I finally have information on where all these markers are located but for a long time I felt they were recorded in error because we have looked for them at least twice without success. The marker for Montgomery Trading Post was never approved due to inconsistencies in the application at the time. The new marker for Lake Creek Settlement has addressed this. I have left the marker on our own page because it is still listed by the Texas historical commission and I wanted to answer to the fact it was never erected. The Elder House is razed but I have not given up on trying to find a photo for this website for the sake of completeness.
Montgomery County historical commission is very active and add several new markers each year. I also have firm locations on some cemeteries we had previously failed to find. I'm trying to talk Steve to a repeat visit in the near future. 4/6/2017 Thanks to Larry Foerster chairman of Montgomery County historical commission who confirmed that the Telegraph Road marker was victim to a car. Montgomery County has applied to reinstated that marker and the Crater Hill and Conroe Oil Field and hope they will be back up later this year.
4/29/2018 It's been a year since I last commented on Montgomery County. We did make the return visit I talked in June last year and managed to snag a few of the marker we were missing. I have to say this area has gotten so much busier than the first time we visited when it seemed rural with some tourist towns like Magnolia. Now it has a lot of very high end homes and lots of traffic.
As to the markers there are two newer markers in Conroe that we still need to capture. Montgomery County chairman tells me he believes the Crater Hill and Telegraph Road marker may have been reinstated but I have not been able to confirm this with any of my usual means. I have a theory that Magnolia Methodists refers to the same marker as the Methodist Church Site, Mem to Circuit Rider I just have to find someone to confirm it. ! 🤔 |
