TEXAS HISTORICAL MARKERS

Atascosa County Historical Markers

NUMBER OF MARKERS IN COUNTY - 66
Have - 55 Need - 11
Named for the Atascosa River. County seat is Jourdanton.
It has taken us some time  and several trips to gather all the far spread markers in this county the biggest challenge being the pink granite Old San Antonio Highway that Steve loves so much, a couple of which are on private property but really besides the distance between some of the towns  and the fact that Atascosa County has become very active in recent years, (they add a couple to several markers a year) capturing all the historical markers in this county has posed very few problems. The Benton City Institute is crumbling and the 18 x 28 marker is not at the site.
I will comment that the feel of this county has changed from 2006 when we first visited from a very rural county feel to in 2016 feeling more like a suburb of San Antonio Jourdanton has strip malls and increasing development, I remember we were both a little surprised at the growth.
Picture
10/25/2018- On this visit we managed to add the Battle of Medina marker that had previously eluded us and another of the Camino Real marker. Atascosa County continues to be very active in adding new markers. I also saw on their facebook page that they had refurbished several of the older markers which is really nice to see.  The only one not yet up being Rancho del Atascosa. Thanks to Atascosa County Historical Commission for answering my questions so quickly
