TEXAS HISTORICAL MARKERS

Austin County Historical Markers

NUMBER OF MARKERS IN COUNTY - 124
Have -86  Need-38
Named for the "Father of Texas" Stephen F. Austin which seems appropriate as it is said the only home he ever owned was in San Felipe, where a centennial marker marks the spot. The county seat is Bellville but the biggest town is Sealy. Our niece Kim and her family are looking to move out this way in an effort to escape Houston. I can understand why, as it is very pretty part of Texas and it feels like you are in the country and yet it is not far from Houston or even Austin for that matter.
It's been a while since we were in Austin County and I was trying to remember if we had stayed here so I posed he question to Steve, his reply was "all I remember about Austin County is it has a lot of cemeteries that I can't get to. Unfortunately this is not too far from the truth this county has the most private cemeteries with historical markers of any county we have been too thus far and there are more added each year. There are also many other markers attached to houses and sites that are also on private property. We could spend another week here without getting close to completing the Austin County set.

There is another anomaly in this county. Markers often appear in the Texas Historical Marker Atlas long before they are actually dedicated and sometimes fail to materialize at all, as with the marker for Peters-Haciendra Community Hall pictured opposite.
Austin County has a very active historical commission and Grace Holtkamp and Joy Neely who have been members for many years have been very helpful with all my many questions. I don't know of any particular markers being missing and I'm not going even start talking about all the markers we have tried to get to but have not yet succeeded, it's really just time to take another stab at it.
26th May, 2018 -  Of the 38 markers we have left in Austin 22 of them are on private property, it is, as I've said before one of the more challenging counties. We did visit last year in August and collected a few of the newer markers but it was a flying trip on the way home from Houston and didn't allow for private property which take a lot more time. I would love to take a couple of days and give it the time it requires, through this is not Steve's favorite part of our "little "hobby.
