Marker Text: ​DeWitt Clinton Baker (1832- 81), a native of Maine, came to Austin about 1850. He published  state history and "Texas scrap-book" ; was a leader in founding the Austin public school system. Baker and his wife Mary Elizabeth (Graham) built  home here in 1871. They had nine children. (1971)
