TEXAS HISTORICAL MARKERS

Bosque County Historical Markers

NUMBER OF MARKERS IN COUNTY - 60
Have - 49 Need - 11
Picture
Bosque translates into  wooded and was named by early Spanish explorers. County seat is Meridian. This county has a strong heritage of Norwegian and German immigrations and you find many of counties markers thar reflect this history. My most dominate thought about this county is private property. There are 59 markers in this county and at least 10 of them are firmly on private property and these are the not visible from the road, permission required type markers. Luckily while we still need to capture "The Bertelsen House" and the "Odle Log Cabin", we have had success with many of the others including the William Berry Smith marker which is in a private cemetery (though we did question the wisdom of making the mile drive to visit the  cemetery when the driver mentioned he was out on parole at the present). Mr Perberthy was very gracious when showing us the Ole Pierson House including the old well in the living room. The owner of the Omerson House said it was quite common for people to stop and take pictures of the house. I have yet to discovery what happened to the "Site of Clifton Mill" marker which though we have looked for it several times have failed to locate. It can't have been up for very long if at all because it was supposed to go up in 2002 and we first looked for it in 2007. We have had an incredible amount of help from so many people in Bosque county which has allowed to almost complete this set, the people here are very proud of their beautiful old homes and properties and want to share their piece Bosque county with people who also appreciate them. There are usually a couple of new markers added a year so there is also a reason to come back.

7th December, 2018 - When I look over our Bosque County collection, I feel very fortunate that we have been able to capture as many of the homes and markers on private property that we have. I would dearly love to add the Oogle Log Cabin and the Bertelsen House as these two are the last of the older marker on private property and they tell a story of how early settlers in the county lived, combining the culture they knew with this new country they adopted as home. Bosque County is one of my favorite counties for this reason and even though the photoes were taken over many years adding one here and one there as the oportunities and information presented themselves and this causes Steve some frustration as he is driving over ground he has already covered and we still have some to complete the set, I feel a sense of achievement in what we have already accomplished.
