Brown County Historical Markers
NUMBER OF MARKERS IN COUNTY - 78
Have - 67 Need - 11
Brown County is named for Commander Henry Stevenson Brown who fought in the Battle of Velesco. The county seat of this west- central Texas county is Brownwood. The first time we drove through Brown County was on a return trip from Colorado for our niece's wedding, Steve was tired and just wanted to get home but he could see I was getting agitated by all the brown historical marker signs we were sailing past and promised we would make a return trip in the near future. True to his word we did embark on the start of our relationship with Brown County, not too long after the initial fly by, though it would take several trips to capture all the markers you see here today.
When we started to plan for the trip I was a night supervisor at St. David's NAMC and one of my best techs had grown up in Brownswood, so I asked a few questions about his recommendations for dining, he mentioned Underwoods an iconic Brownswood Cafeteria type restaurant but even through we were staying almost next door, Steve was not in a rush to go back, having tried it in the eighties while in his bank courier days. I would personally love to try the fried chicken. We have eaten more than once at a restaurant in the downtown area called Turtle Restaurant this one would always be part of our plans when in Brownswood which if you knew Steve you would understand, that is reason within itself to try it out.
I am waiting for response from Brown County Historical Commission to see if they have any plans to replace the missing Swinden Pecan Orchard marker and we have a few still to capture but as Brown County has an active historical commission I think that may always be the case,
