TEXAS HISTORICAL MARKERS

Burnet County Historical Markers

Number OF MARKERS IN COUNTY- 86

Picture
Named for David G. Burnet  David Gouverneur Burnet the first provisional president of the republic of Texas. County seat is Burnet (pronounced  Bur-nit don't get it wrong! or it will definitely mark you as a non-Texan. Burnet County is one of the first counties we explored with this "little" hobby of ours and some of the pictures are not what they should be. Burnet County is close to home for us, being a neighboring county to Williamson where we live so we have been in and out many times. When I do a review of a county like this I'm looking to see if anything has changed, are there new markers? is there any new information on the markers we are missing? In this case there was, a marker that was missing in 2006, Marble Falls Factory Site has now been reinstated and is accessible. Have contacts for private property marks changed? Many years ago I contacted Annette Hanszen in regards to capturing the Old Thomas Ranch House she was delighted by our hobby but her husband was very sick and that time was not great for a visit. Both Annette and her husband have sadly passed and so now has their son who was the current property owner. Another change was that for many years Smith Cemetery was inaccessible because the property owner with the access road didn't want people on his property this was in litigation for many years, recently another property owner donated their property so another road allows access.  The Burnet County  1936 Centennial County Marker is still missing which ia always surprising to me because it would take a huge effort for anyone to move these large pieces of granite.
Burnet County is a pretty county and I wouldn't have any trouble living here, one of my first day trips in Texas was to see the bald eagles on the vanishing river river cruise which is a trip well worth doing. Burnet County Historical Commission have also always been a helpful even though we have yet to capture some of the private property markers.
17th November, 2018 -  We paid a little Sunday morning visit in order to capture a few of the new markers. I discovered the Old Thomas Ranch is up for sale so it maybe possible to capture a picture of this lovely old home. I have a lead on the Stewart Pioneer Home that i was once told had burnt down but now know is still happily still standing, I am quietly hopeful that will will capture this old house. The Smith Cemetery has a gate code to gain access if anyone knows it we would love to visit, please contact us.
