Caboose
Marker Text: This Caboose, once office and the nerve center for train crews, was given to the Panhandle because (1887) had distinction as end of line, Kansas Southern (now Santa Fe) Railway. In late 19th and early 20th centuries, cowboys rode in the caboose to tend and water market- bound herds at intervals when train halted. A transport to bright lights of Chicago, St. Louis or Kansas City, held glamour beyond its workaday use. To wife and children back home, It returned the wanderer and wondrous gifts he brought. (1969)
