Callahan County Historical Markers
NUMBER OF MARKERS IN COUNTY - 39
Have - 33 Need - 6
County named for a soldier in the Texas revolution James Hughes Callahan. The county seat is Baird.
Our trips through Callahan County have always as part or bigger trips so I don't have a real sense of this county, my impressions are more a series of towns or even individual markers at different times. One thing that does stand out is the replacement of several aluminum marker with concrete painted plaques. I have written to the Callahan County Historical Commission get the scoop behind these markers. I suspect however that these markers which for the most part are in very rural areas were in some way damaged or stolen and the money did not exist to replace the aluminum ones but the commitment to the history survived so they found a more durable alternative. The Texas Historical Commission Atlas does not list a marker for The Dr. John Collier Residence but a book published by them in the 1970's does list it so am looking for this house also. Most the most part Callahan County has not posed many difficulties in regards to finding markers or missing markers and this is another reason my memories of this county are not very strong. Maybe we can correct this on our next visit.

2nd February, 2019 - Callahan County Historical Commission chairperson Judy Luter kindly answered all my above questions regarding this counties markers. The concrete replacement markers were put in place because the metal ones were being stolen for scrap and it is cost prohibitive to keeps trying to replace them. Dr. John Collier residence is no longer there and the former owner had no connection to the Collier family and had the marker removed. I have had trouble confirming that the marker for the Higginbotham Brothers and Company has been, so I have made a new inquiry.
