TEXAS HISTORICAL MARKERS

Cameron County Historical Markers

NUMBER OF MARKERS IN COUNTY - 176
Have - 88  Need- 88
Picture
Cameron County is named for Capt. Ewen Cameron, who was a member of the Mier expedition. The county seat is Brownsville.
We visited South Padre as part of our honeymoon in 2006, that was really the very start of our very big hobby. We weren't as organized back then and when we visited Brownsville we were not prepared for the one way streets and the heat, and thus we only captured a fraction of the markers in this county.  The photos are not what I would like them to be either, so a repeat visit is in order I would really love a second chance to explore this vibrant border town.
It would be overwhelming at this point to try and talk about the markers in terms of what are missing we have simply not had enough time to look. A couple of old houses have definately been razed, these are the Armstrong House, Santos Lozano Building and Trevino House, these once had historical markers and for the sake of completeness have been included on this site. Cameron County Historical Commission has also been very active and have been busily dedicating new markers.

12th December 2022- We took a few days after the worse of COVID had passed and my managers were in place, and visited South Padre which we had not visited since 2006. I love the beach down here and even through it is much busier than in 2006 it is still possible to find a quiet spot on the beach to relax. We revisited the Sea Ranch Restaurant which we fell in love with in 2006 and it didn't fail to disappoint on this occasion.
As far as the markers go it is a complicated county. There are houses that are gone, there are areas that I'm not sure are safe to explore at the moment and the Cameron County Historical Commission is very active in recognizing the history that exists here. I would love to spend some time exploring Brownville and now we live in Portland, Texas its a lot more doable. It been many years since we have been to Brownsville and even through it was very hot when we were there I remember it being vibrant, similar to what I imagine Mexico to be.

27th November, 2024 -  I love how bright and vibrant this part of Texas is. On this trip, we visited prior to moving back to Austin, to spend some time at the beach and relax. It was not strictly a marker trip but we did do a little driving, unfortunately there was no time to tackle Brownsville which I would dearly love to do.
Steve likes to drive but he doesn't much like traffic. I like to stay in the middle of a city and get out and
walk and explore, both tacks will be needed to complete the Cameron County set.
Cameron County Historical Commission have been very busy and there are a lot of new markers, many of which are not up yet. For some waiting years between when they were approved to now. This happens for a couple of reasons the first is that the foundry that the Texas Historical Commission had used since the beginning of the historical marker program closed down and a new foundry had to be found which delayed the making of markers for about two years. Sometimes it is an issue money the large 27 x 42 subject markers cost over 2000 dollars and this money has to be raised if it is not really available.  Other reasons include looking for the right time for the dedication or the right location for the marker and of course not everyone always agrees so the marker waits a consensus.
We did not locate the marker for Rancho de Santa Maria it was certainly not across from Our Lady of Visitation Church which is where it was noted to be located in the atlas. The Dunlap House in La Feria was unfortunately razed and not too too long ago 🥺. As to the many other markers we have to look before I comment, it is simply a county that requires you search prior to considering it missing.
