Colorado County Historical Markers
NUMBER OF MARKERS IN COUNTY- 141
Have -131 Need- 10
Colorado County is named for the Colorado River. The county seat is Columbus. We did the majority of our exploring in this county in 2008, usually when driving home from Houston. Apart from a couple of markers on private property and couple that were missing, we have been very successful in this county. I remember Columbus to be a pretty county town, with some very beautiful old homes, like the Simpson-Williamson home displayed on this page. Colorado County has been busy and has added several new markers so it is time for a return visit. The only marker I can't confirm being in place is Mike Muckleroy, I don't remember if we have looked for this one before but the google car does not go down Elroy Lane and there are no photos of it that I could locate, which is unusual in itself. I like this area of Texas, it always seems so green, and when the wild flowers are blossoming it is breathtaking.
August 21st, 2024- We briefly visited Weimar on our way home from Houston. It has been a long time since we captured any markers in Colorado County so I believe a review is very much needed and warranted.
As I wrote back in 2008, I do love Colorado County, it is shaded by large trees and has many beautiful old houses.
As it sometimes happens the county opens up, and it gets easier rather than more difficult to locate all the counties markers. There are three on private property that I would love to capture and I will work on trying to contact the owners. Several of the houses that had markers missing are back in place so YAY. GPS was not as widely available back in 2008 as it is now so we also have much better directions. All this to say its time for a return visit.

January 22nd, 2025- We visited Columbus on our many to Houston, to visit Steve's dad, a few weeks ago. We intended to capture more on the way home but decided to come straight home to weather protect the pipes as it had turned very chilly. We did learn whilst visiting with our sister-in-law Jacque that our nephew Chris is a partner in ownership of the Hotel Dallas 1912 in Eagle lake and is currently restoring and renovating the old hotel into a hunters lodge, so that is kind of neat and I'll be interested to see how it looks when they are done.
As far as markers go I believe they are all in place, there are a few on private property that may require permission but I think there is a good chance to complete this county.
