Comanche County Historical Markers
NUMBER OF MARKERS IN COUNTY-74
Have -59 Need - 15
Named for the Comanche Indian tribe. The County seat is Comanche.
We have driven through Comanche County several times on our way to and from home, picking up out of the way and new markers but we have also stayed in the town of Comanche, which as I have said before gives you a different sense of a town. We stayed in a bed & breakfast called Mary's On the Square which was perfect for what we were doing. I like staying on the square because it gives me a chance to get out early and take unobstructed pictures of the courthouse, stores and churches. Unfortunately most major chain hotels are on the out-skirts of town so this happens more rarely these days. It also allows me to visit the antique stores without having Steve waiting in the car which means I can try and find a Christmas ornament, I try and get one from each county we go to, this is not always as easy as it sounds. We still have a few markers to capture in Comanche County, the Cunningham Home and Mary Isham are on private property but we haven't given up on them yet (at least I haven't). The Cunningham Family have a strong history with Comanche with several of the counties markers involving the family. There is a yearly family reunion which attracts hundreds of Cunninghams and this years will be the 128th year that it has been active. The marker's for the First Presbyterian Church, Mollie E. Moore and Jones Crossing are inside the Comanche County Museum, we have never quite been there at the 10:00 am - 4pm Wednesday to Saturday opening to capture those markers as yet. |
There are other counties where markers that have been saved from buildings that end up inside the local museum, in fact we found the original Choctaw Robinson Tree in a museum in Stephenville while we were looking for a totally different marker. The thing with these county museums is that they are often open at limited times, they are usually manned by volunteers so it is completely understandable. We have been know to plan our agenda around the times a particular museum is open and even then it can be hit or miss. I believe the Proctor marker is missing I will write to Comanche county to see if there are plans to replace it. The L.B. Russell Home's owner took the medallion and plate off the house because he didn't want people looking at it.
June 30th, 2019- Comanche County added one new marker since my last review of this county, again at the musuem so we really need to visit when it open.
