TEXAS HISTORICAL MARKERS

Eastland Historical Markers

NUMBER OF MARKERS IN COUNTY-57
Have - 53   Need - 4
Picture
Named for William Mosby Eastland the only officer killed in the Black Bean executions. The county seat is Eastland.
Our last visit to Eastland County was part of a bigger trip but we did stay a night in Eastland. Thinking back I have stronger impressions of the old oil town of Ranger than of Eastland but I do remember the legend of "Old Rip" the horn toad said to be bricked into the corner stone of the courthouse and 31 years later when the cornerstone was opened he appeared alive and well, he then went on tour and even met a president.
This excursion was largely successful with only a few outliers and with the help of Ann Zoelick from Eastland County historical commission, I think the next time we visit we can complete the county set. I say this knowing there is one exception, the pink granite centennial county marker is missing, which always surprises me because they are a really big piece of granite and would not be easy to move. Sometimes they have been moved for roadwork and many counties have moved these markers to the county courthouse where the brass plaque and star and wreath are safer from thieves and/or vandals but for no one to know what happened to it continues to surprise me.
