Ellis County Historical Markers
NUMBER OF MARKERS IN COUNTY - 125
Have - 96 Need- 28

County is named for Richard Ellis who was the president of the convention when the Texas Declaration of Independence was formed. County seat is Waxahachie.
Not far from Dallas and Fort Worth but feels rural, Waxahachie is your typical county town with a central courthouse and stores around the square, lots of churches, farms and some beautiful unique old homes. Waxahachie has a lot of these homes on the National Register of Historic Places and while we were there Steve was continuously commenting on why houses did not have Texas historical markers because in any other town they certainly would have. Our first visits were on the way to and from Dallas/Fort Worth, probably for a concert of some kind, Bob Dylan, Paul Simon or someone else I can't easily remember but Steve if asked, would be able to recall in a couple of seconds. The last visit earlier this year was to pick up our 12 year old niece who was flying in from Australia we took a few on the way to Dallas and then a few more after we had dropped her back after two weeks. Unfortunately I had to go back to work pretty much immediately and my ACLS certification needed to be renewed prior to returning to work so I was distracted and couldn't enjoy Waxahachie as much as I would of have due to having to get home and get the 8 hour online section done that day.
On researching these markers most of what we have left are present and accessible and I could confirm a lot more on this review than on the first review seven years ago, there is a lot more information available now. I asked Ellis County Historical Commission about some of the upcoming markers, the location of the plate that is supposed to be with the medallion on the courthouse and possible access to Jackson Cemetery. Sylvia Stanford-Smith long time historical Commission chairperson has always been happy to answer questions in the past so I am hopeful for answers.

10th November, 2019 - Ellis County has added a couple of new markers but I believe that the lack of fountry is holding up the installation here as it is everywhere at the moment. The Sylvia Stanford-Smith got back to me on my last review and related that she had never known the courthouse to have an plate to go to the medallion.
