Marker Text: In the 1870s, Methodist circuit rider A.H. Sutherland held camp meetings in the area. By 1883, before the establishment of Alice attendees of the meetings began to conduct worship services under a brush arbor. Meetings moved to a railroad car and later to members' houses before a church and educational building was completed in 1891. Members dedicated new sanctuaries in 1896, 1934 and 1958. First United Methodist Church has a rich tradition of outeach; members have perticpated in local and global missions. They have also aided victims of floods and hurricanes. Though the community has experienced periods of growth and decline, First United Methodist Church has remained a faithful presence in the Alice community. (2009)
