Fort Bend County Historical Markers
NUMBER OF MARKERS IN COUNTY- 106
Have - 75 Need - 31

Named for a blockhouse at a bend in the Brazos River. County seat is Richmond. It is the wealthiest county in Texas. We first visited Fort Bend County on our way home from Houston that was over ten years ago and it felt much more rural at that time, than it does now. We have been on another couple trips to Fort Bend since that first one including one overnight trip. Now it feels more like a suburb of Houston to me, in fact Steve's brother Mike talked about moving out to Fulshear and commuting to Houston for work. I can understand why this would be appealing, there are some beautiful neighborhoods out this way but it no longer has the same country feel that it did on that first visit.
In this county we have been struggling with several markers being in storage especially around Sugar Land. We also tried to get to the Texas Prison System Central State Farm Main Building marker but Steve was wearing shorts so we weren't allowed pass the check point 😒 . It maybe more accessible now that the prison was closed down. There also several markers on private property, including cemeteries, houses and many gray granite centennials.
Fort Bend County has an active historical commission with at least a couple of new markers each year so we have at least a couple more days to spend here if there is any chance of closing out this county. In this county I have found the Fort Bend Historical Commission to be very helpful. After our first visit I had many questions which they tried very hard to answer, this is not always the case so I am very grateful to Bettye Anhaiser, Committee Chairman, for taking the time to send a lot of useful information.

22nd May, 2018 - Update - We visited again the weekend before Harvey hit and did manage to add a few more Fort Bend markers to the collection. There is obviously still quite a lot of work to do in Fort Bend County, 25 markers still to capture to be exact, many on private property which always takes a lot more time and effort. It looks the prison system marker maybe at the old entrance to the prison so that at least maybe possible. We also have a few more leads thanks the Fort Bend Historical Commission so we will see how it all pans out.
11th December, 2019 - We have yet to revisit and as with my last update there are still many challenges and I suspect while some become easier to access as this county becomes more and more developed, some of the older houses will be put at risk.
24th November, 2021 - As I said above some markers become easier to access as this county becomes more and more developed. The down side is that development brings traffic and it is not so fun to drive here, It really feels like an extension of Houston. Fort Bend is now on our route to Jersey Village so I image we will be filling in some gaps.
