TEXAS HISTORICAL MARKERS

Hamilton County Historical Markers

NUMBER OF MARKER IN COUNTY - 44
Have -40  Need- 4
Picture
The county was named for James Hamilton, Jr. who supported the Republic of Texas with financing when he was governor of South Carolina. The county seat is Hamilton.
We have visited Hamilton County many times as is it often on our way home from a larger trip. We have captured the majority
of the county's markers,  most being found in and around Hamilton. These are the ones we have yet to capture:- Brummett Cemetery is the newest Hamilton County marker it is on private property but I think I may have a lead on who to ask for access. Hurst Ranch Cemetery was not up the last time we visited up it is in place now. J. G. Barbee House is on private property and if you have any information on the current owner we would love to hear from you. The Rock House masonic lodge as pictured to the left no longer has it's medallion for obvious reasons. The J. J. (Jack) Durham House once in Hamilton fell into disrepair and then burnt down. I would love to find a picture of it for the sake of completeness, even though it is no longer listed in the Texas Historical Commission atlas.
We were lucky enough to visit the old Durham Ranch at exactly the right time, the owner was in the driveway and was very gracious in allowing us to photograph the house and the medallion. This is always a highlight for me and it is what I think about when I think about Hamilton County.
