TEXAS HISTORICAL MARKERS

Harris County Historical Markers

NUMBER OF MARKERS IN COUNTY - 548
Have -320   Need- 228
Picture
Named for early settler John Richardson Harris. County seat is of course Houston.
Harris County is a beast in terms of historical markers and I'm not even trying to talk about damaged or missing markers because Harris County Historical Commission has already done all of the work in that regards, so feel free to click on the link to their web page, which is absolutely the best of it's kind I have come across, especially considering how many markers the county has. For me Harris County is about family, we try and visit Steve's parents every few months, and years ago we said we would try and pick up at least one marker every visit and that is probably the reason we have as many of the markers as we do. We have lost track of this in the last few years but I think we need to start doing this again.  Steve grew up in Houston but it is easily his least favorite county to marker hunt in. The reasons, being the traffic, the heat, and the nearly endless roadwork. It is also a geographically large county and can easily take at least two hours or more to get from one side to another. Harris County also has an extremely robust program and adds several new markers each year so the chances of ever finishing are unlikely.
I did say to Steve this year on one of our visits we are going to stay downtown so I can walk around the city and capture some of the many markers we still need, so stay tuned.

25th April, 2020 - I'm not going to lie, when I knew Harris County was next up for review I was not looking forward to it, but COVID -19 meant I suddenly had the time at home to get it done😥. The time it has taken, has however been valuable, I discovered  some mapping errors I had made, markers that had moved, new markers, and even some information on some of the older markers that had previously been thought to have been lost and markers I had failed to list.  It is still and probably always will be a massive undertaking and as I said before Steve's least favorite place for this "little hobby" of ours.
27th June, 2022 - We spent a couple of days in downtown Houston while I had a work event. It's the first I had ever stayed in downtown and I enjoyed being so close to everything and the vibrancy of this city. I wished we had had more time to capture more of the downtown marker.
I would also love to revisit the Courtlandt Place house markers the first time we vistied the gate to this gated community was wide open, and since then they have additional house with markers and the gates have always been shut.
Our next little trip was to the Baytown area, we need to go back and complete this area.
Harris County has added many new markers and it feels like they will always have more to history to memorize.
