Hemphill County Historical Markers
NUMBER OF MARKERS IN COUNTY: 35
Have -28 Need- 7
Hemphill County is in the Panhandle of Texas, the county seat is Canadian, which unlike some other towns in this part of Texas seems to be doing well. The county is named after John Hemphill a judge and Confederate congressman. In this county more than any other I can remember we located markers, more by luck than design. The directions seemed to be more suggestions as to where to start looking. At least a couple of markers had different directions but were in the same locations. The markers in Canadian were easy to locate but the ones off FM 2266 we stumbled over and we just got lucky that we actually located them all. I didn't have an i-phone at this time, we are really not phone people but as work became more complicated I relented and brought one, but at that time we were flying blind on the road with no more information than the research I had done prior to leaving home. Now the phone and my Texas Historical Guide app are at times very helpful. I tell you all this because when I look back at Hemphill I still feel very lucky that we found all the markers available at that time. The county has since dedicated markers for several cemeteries and the Hemphill County Jail marker has been reinstated.
10th June, 2020 - On review the only marker I'm not sure about is the Texas State line marker the should be on Texas-33
