Lee County Historical Markers
NUMBER OF MARKERS IN COUNTY - 59
County seat and location of the majority of the markers is Giddings. The county is named for Robert E. Lee a commander in the Confederate Army.
Lee County was one of the earliest counties we visited in order to capture historical markers (unfortunately some of the photos reflect this). In saying that I believe the relationship you have with places changes depending on how much time you have spend there. We have been in and out of Lee County numerous times traveling to Houston to visit Steve's parents and this is mostly how with have taken pictures in this county, on the way to or from somewhere else, we haven't stayed overnight here or even eaten a meal here. Though going back over the Lexington shots, a return visit maybe in order, coinciding with a taste of the famous Snow's barbecue. Lee County has given us no particular difficulty, unlike is neighbor Bastrop County, most markers are easily accessible. There was some early confusion locating the Old San Antonio Road markers but the www.texascounties.net/articles/el-camino-real-de-los-tejas/osrmarkersummary.htm website has helped sort though much of that. The only missing marker is for Dime Box and it has been gone for a least 30 years taken out by a car. According to Lee County historical commission there was some talk of trying replace the marker but thus far that has not come to fruition. Lee County puts up one to two new markers a year some of which we still need to capture. |
