TEXAS HISTORICAL MARKERS

Mills County Historical Markers

NUMBER OF MARKERS IN COUNTY- 35
Named for Texas supreme court justice John T. Mills. County seat is Goldthwaite. A rural county in the Edwards Plateau pretty much in the very middle of Texas.
I don't have a heap to say about Mills County. It is unique in the fact that it doesn't really have any missing markers and there weren't any markers we failed to locate . They add about one new marker a year and we try and plan our route when in the area in order to capture it. The only mystery I have been unable to solve is in a "Guide to Official Texas Historical Markers" published 1975. The only marker they list belonging to Mills County is Center City Lodge Hall location of Fisher & 5th Streets. Center City doesn't have Fisher or 5th Street but Goldthwaite does, the marker is not listed in the Texas Historical Commission atlas and while I have seen reference to the building on a couple of websites I have yet to see a picture of it. I have written to the Mills County Historical Commission to see if they can shed any light on the mystery for me.

We have always talked about stopping at the Wagon Wheel restaurant in Goldthwaite because we heard they have  excellent burgers but have managed to find a good time to stop.  Oh well, it gives a reason to go back.
8/7/17 - The mystery of the Lodge Hall is solved thanks to Rose Lee Head of the Mills County Historical Commission. The building was torn down in 1974 much to the dismay of the townsfolk. It was indeed in Center City.
