TEXAS HISTORICAL MARKERS

Navarro County Historical Marker

NUMBER OF MARKER IN COUNTY- 159
Have-  147      Need- 12
Picture
Navarro County is in north central Texas. It's county seat is Corsicana. Named for Jose Navarro, who has a large centennial monument at the Navarro County Courthouse. Jose Antonio Navarro was a Texas patriot and played a large role in the Texas Revolution.
I'll preface this by saying that there has been 16 years between when the majority of photos were taken to my writing down my thoughts and impressions of Navarro county. I had to ask Steve if we had actually stayed here because I didn't think we had but I wasn't completely sure. I remember there are many beautiful old houses, but the thing that most comes to mind is being able to capture Corsicana State home which back in 2008 was behind locked razor wired fences, required permission and an escort as it was part of the juvenile detention center.
There are many new markers, a couple of which I believe have yet to be placed. A couple of cemeteries on private property but the greatest challenge I believe will be Magnolia Oil Refinery which may or may not be on the refinery grounds and thus behind fences and will again require permission.
We are leaving tomorrow and will be visiting this area and should be able to cut the markers needed down by half and hopefully will have some more interesting information.

21st August, 2025 - At the end of 2024 we spend a free hours in Navarro County and picked up a few of the markers we were missing. none were particularly difficult  or complicated most were new. Navarro County Historical Commission says that  the marker for Magnolia Oil Refinery is not up yet.
