Marker Text: ​Built by contractor-merchant-investor Seba Bogart Brush (1827-1874), who came by covered wagon from New Jersey, 1854. He bought site in 1869; in 1871 completed structure just as tracks of the Houston & Texas Central - city's first railroad - were laid south of Pecan (now 6th) Street. Operated as Shaw House, then as St. Charles House, this was location (1876) of one of Texas' first ice cream saloons; was owned 1874-1924 by builder's daughter, Laura Brush. (1971
