Marker Text: A native of Estill County, Kentucky, Simpson Crawford (1824-1908) served in the Mexican War (1846-48) at Veracruz and Mexico City. Following the war he returned to Kentucky and married Elizabeth Evans in 1849. In 1852 the Crawfords moved to Texas, settling first in Titus County. They came to Palo Pinto County in 1854 and built a home (3/4 mi. NW) on a 320-acre tract in the Keechi Valley area of Peters Colony. Crawford was a successful cattle rancher and his holdings eventually grew to 3100 acres. He also served as a Texas Ranger. Elizabeth died in 1858 and Simpson Crawford married Mrs. Mary Brown four years later. He is buried in Crawford Cemetery (1.5 mi. N), for which he deeded the land. (1980)
