TEXAS HISTORICAL MARKERS

Tarrant County Historical Markers

NUMBER OF MAKERS IN COUNTY- 400
Have- 241  Need- 159
Picture
Named for General Edward H. Tarrant an officer in the Texas Army. County seat is Fort Worth.  Tarrant County has the third most markers of any county, third only to Harris and Dallas counties.  I'm going to get this out early I like Fort Worth much more that Dallas even through it's hard to know where one stops and the other starts. Fort Worth is one of Texas' biggest city but to me, it still feels down to earth, like the cowtown it started as.
On our last visit in January 2018 we got to play tourist. Our niece Aimie was visiting from Australia so we spent a few days showing her around before the cold weather forced us home. We walked around Fort Worth to the Water Gardens, took in the botanic gardens and pioneer village. We did the longhorn cattle drive and Aimie sat on a longhorn all be it backwards initially. We ate at the famous Joe T. Garcia's which was a good experience. We didn't make it to the zoo which was also on the agenda. I would have loved to take her to Six Flags but the middle of winter is not the time for it.
Marker hunting in a city this size with this many markers is tough, especially when we don't get there very often.  There are other marker hunters who live in the area that have done a much more complete job than us. There are many difficulties in trying to complete the set. Surprisingly there are actually very few missing markers but there are some, there are markers that have been moved including a few Confederate markers recently,  that have been moved to the Confederate museum. Building that have been razed. The sheer size and traffic is another obstacle but the growth has had an unexpected benefit, markers that were once on private property and hard to access are now off main roads or in the parking lot of a strip mall. Tarrant County has a robust historical commission and they regularly add to their already impressive number of markers so we are always playing catch up. There are the hard to get to, on private property markers but not that many. There are also corners of this corner we have simply not got to yet! I'm going to hold off talking about individual markers at this time because I am waiting for responses to some of my many inquires.
