Taylor County Historical Markers
NUMBER OF MARKERS IN COUNTY - 73
Have - 59 Need- 16

Named for the Taylor brothers Edward, George and James who fought and died at the Battle of the Alamo. County seat is Abilene.
When we stayed in Abilene in 2012 we were on way to our niece's wedding in Colorado so it made for a more generic type visit to west Texas county. What I mean by this is that we only had a limited amount of time for marker hunting and no extra time to explore, basically our first visit to Taylor County was all business. So I really don't have as much of a feeling for the area as I would usually have when it is somewhere we have actually stayed. Steve also had trouble remembering where we stayed, ate or exactly how many nights we were there. We didn't get to eat at Cypress Street Saloon or visit the Abilene Zoo both things I would normally love to do.
I do remember the markers and what stands out is the ones we failed to locate. I know for sure the Miss Clara Bussell marker is missing and I have written to Taylor County Historical Commission to see if they have any plans to replace it. The Lawn Atlas ICBM marker has yet to be erected because the location had to be changed, it will eventually be installed at the entry area of the launch facility. Many thanks to Larry Sanders for answering my question about this marker. Now the McMillan House, J. G. Higginbotham House, H. O. Wooten Grocery Warehouse and the Original Site of Abilene High School, are all listed on the Texas Historical Atlas as having markers. The buildings are all still in place and I think if the markers were there we would have found them. I it is my believe that despite both the houses being on the National Register of Historic Places and being more than worthy of having Texas historic markers they have never had markers and are on the atlas in error are a couple like this in Williamson County also. The jury is still out on the high school and Wooten store.
We purposefully did not visit the Buffalo Gap area because we both want to try the renown Perini Steakhouse and plan to stay out on the ranch on our next visit, which I could get excited about just anticipating this future adventure.
