Marker Text: On March 31, 1891, T.H. and Priscilla Thomas conveyed one and one-half acres of this land to the trustees of the Union Band Missionary Baptist Church. Three days later, Steve and Helen Jennings' infant son was laid to rest here, the earliest marked grave at this site. In 1898, a transaction between G.W. & N.J. Barton and W.H.Holloway added more land to the Union Band Cemetery. The origins of this name are elusive; some longtime residents say it may be derived from the banding together of former Union soldiers with local citizens to established the church and cemetery. It remains as a record of those that settled and developed this area. (2001)
