Wharton County Historical Markers
NUMBER OF MARKERS IN COUNTY - 78
Have - 62 Need- 16
Wharton County was named for brothers William Harris and John A. Wharton. The county seat is Wharton.
We have been in and out of this county several times recently, as we have travelled between our home in Portland and Houston, however when we do this, as opposed to visiting and staying for a couple of days I don't feel I get as good a sense of the county. This county for me will be forever linked withgoing to care for my mother-in-law and quick stops on the way home to grab a marker here and there. The place we have visitied the most is Prasek's Smokehouse which has excellent meats and many other delicious reasons to make the stop.
Wharton County has been busy catching up from the pandemic and is actively making up for lost time, not all their markers are up yet but they are dedicating as quickly as possible. I don't want to address missing markers at this time because I feel there is so much more to do, in regards to looking for markers before we consider them missing. There are a few on private property that may prove harder to capture and some we need to visit the museum for. The musuem itself is listed on the atlas as having a marker and we have seen this before and I believe the musuem itself does not have a marker but we will certainly look when we visit it.

April 15th, 2022 - We played catch up a bit and visited the Wharton County museum which helped a lot including one we weren't even looking for. Wharton County is still putting up new markers so there will be and few more visits in the future. I believe Burr Albert Harrison Plantation is one longer in existence so I will try and find a picture of this. The Texas Historical Commission lists a marker for the Community of Egypt and I believe this marker was replaced by the Egypt marker. There are a couple of private cemeteries that I would love to visit. The most surprising thing that happened on this visti was the discovery of the First East Bernard School marker in the Wharton County museum because ewe weren't looking for this one at all.
