TEXAS HISTORICAL MARKERS

Dallas County Historical Markers

NUMBER OF MARKERS IN COUNTY - 434
Have -135 Need- 299
Picture
Dallas County may have been named for George Mifflin Dallas the 11th Vice- president of the United States. The county seat is Dallas, it is the third largest Texas city. Pretentious, snobby, fast-paced, rich, you could hear any of these adjectives to describe Dallas, it is a big, spread out, busy city. We have been to Dallas several times, through, when in the area we tend to stay in Fort Worth which is my preference. Dallas County  is marker rich, though traffic and distance makes capturing them tiring and we really can only do a few hours without losing patience. There are many people that have covered Dallas County far more completely than we have and it would take a couple of full weeks for us to come close to capturing the majority of the markers, which I don't see happening any time soon.
As far as the markers go, there is one unique thing in Dallas County. There are at least four older markers still listed in the Texas Historic Atlas that were never of been placed.  I wrote Dallas Historical Commission but they could not supply answers to any of my questions, the focus being on new markers.
Steve has actually lived in Dallas and if it ever came down to having to transfer out of Austin, given the choice between Houston and Dallas he would choose Dallas,  all be it reluctantly.

31st December 2024 - We stayed in Dallas to see the Dobie Brothers in July of 24. We were north of downtown staying in the Canopy Hotel (a really like this line of Hilton Hotels) and managed to capture another 20 or so Dallas County historical markers, mostly old ones which makes me happy.
I confirmed that there no pink granite was ever placed for General William L. Cabell and John Henry Brown, which I knew but confirmed by walking to their graves There are other markers in Dallas where this is the case and as I said above this is unusual. Markers are not free and must be researched and applied for, to go to this effort and cost and then not place them is surprising to me. The two markers I mentioned are from the sixties but there have also been a couple of recent cases the Roach Feed and Seed Store and the A.J. Head Service Station are examples. It can take some time, even years, between being approved for a marker and dedication so maybe these two will still be placed.
Dallas County Historical Commission has added many new markers. These markers are mostly dealing with undertold history. I recently read Stephen King's 11/22/63, which is a fictional tale surrounding President Kennedy's assassination, King was criticized for being to hard on Dallas in the book and I did find myself becoming a little indignant, he painted a picture of Dallas being racist.  the new historical markers seem to indicate he was not wrong and are attempting be more in inclusive of all of Dallases population even if that does not always shed a positive light. The Confederate monument has been removed and it is yet to be determined what will happen to it.
Dallas would take weeks to months to complete and even if we had that sort of time available there are always new markers being added. And while I am not a city person, I could happily stay in a hotel downtown and walk away my days and explore for week or so, but Steve prefers to be out in the country on the Texas back roads so our Dallas trips will probably always be when we are visiting for some other reason.
