TEXAS HISTORICAL MARKERS

Henderson County Historical Marker

NUMBER OF MARKERS IN COUNTY - 120
Have - 100  Need - 20
Picture
Henderson County is named for James Pinckney Henderson, who was a governor of Texas. The county seat is Athens.
We tripped over the one marker we have in this county, it was not part of the plan but we saw it and of course, couldn't just drive past without capturing it. So for a little background when we return from one of our trips and and the pictures are downloaded onto our site, I put the county up for review. Initially, this started with the research of the hard ones and still does, but it also ensures we have all the new ones added in. So when something like Henderson County happens, where we only got one marker I still do the review, it's just a very different review to the one I do when there are only 3 or 4 markers left, that we may have already looked for. I map all the markers on out The Roads of Texas Atlas (this will sometimes irritate Steve enough as to trigger a visit if only to clear the map). I  see if I can confirm the existence of the marker by looking at the various sites that may have a picture or I even take the google car and see if I can see the marker on the road.
For Henderson County, I was able to confirm a surprising number of the markers, apart from new markers.

19th June, 2020 - On review some new markers have been added that I am not sure are up yet and a couple of the old ones maybe missing. Unfortunately, we had planned a trip to this area just prior to COVID and left it a tad too long and everything shut down so hopefully we will be able to reschedule soon.
24th April 2025 - We finally returned to Henderson County at the end of 2024. I really have to concentrate to remember what my impressions of what this county were, in this I mean I remember the markers and the ones that we missed or were difficult but not what made Henderson County stand out. I know we ate at the Jalapeno Tree a couple times, and the food was good but the margaritas just okay😒. Athens is a bigger county town not unlike many in Texas, my thoughts about this town are linked to a girl I worked with in the early days of my coming to Texas, who came from Athens.
When I think about the markers, I think churches and cemeteries. There are many cemeteries that we were unable to access on this trip because they were on private property, so this will take some research, emails and a return trip in order to capture them and complete the county. There were at least 3, 27 x 42  and 1 18 x 28 aluminum subject markers that were missing, (we did capture the poles as proof and so we remember why we don't have them). These are Buffalo, Fincastle, Antioch Cemetery and New York Baptist Church, I will write to Henderson County Historical Commission to see if there are any plans in place to replace them.
