Hockley County is named for George Washington Levelland, who was secretary of war for the  Republic of Texas. The county seat is Levelland. We really did not have much time in this county, we were on our way to Santa Fe and time was slipping away. So we captured a few in Levelland and because I had not researched this county we missed a couple of the ones we probably would have gone for had the county been mapped. On looking over the markers now, it appears that all the markers are still in place and over the last few years a few new ones have been added.
