Marker Text: Here he entertained Robert E. Lee and other famous men. He was known for his Christianity, hospitality, and charity to the poor and orphans. He blew up his store to keep the powder and shot from the enemy during Vasquez's Raid March 1842. He was captured by Woll September 1842, escaped with other Texas prisoners July 2, 1843, by digging through the walls of the castle of Perote, Mexico
