Refugio County Historical Markers
NO OF MARKERS IN COUNTY - 33
Have- 26 Need - 7
Named for Nuestra Señora del Refugio Mission. County seat is Refugio. Refugio seemed like a kind of sleepy gulf coast county, we have mostly been here on the weekends and there never seems to be much happening. That has not always been the case, the battle of Refugio happened here and the are several very old large Texas ranches are in this area also.
As far as markers go it the ones we have were easy no problem what-so-ever the ones left are all harder and one or two may be impossible without some help and the right contacts in the area. I few years ago a friend of mine started to visit and catalogue all the 1936 centennial markers in Texas there are an odd 1000 of these markers and several of are in truly remote sometimes almost forgotten parts of Texas. Sarah Reveley is very tenacious, her and Barclay Gibson are a good deal braver than I am and will travel onto private property looking for these markers documenting their condition and pinpointing their location all with the blessing of the Texas Historical Commission who has also had trouble getting track of these markers over the years. (Centennial project) I say all this because while most smaller counties may have one or two of these large gray centennials markers Refugio County has 5 and one of them even Barclay has not located the John W. Bower Home and he has a real nose for them. So when I say I am less than optimistic about getting all the markers in this county I am not exaggerating. I have written to Refugio County Historical Commission for help so we'll see and maybe be pleasantly surprised. The beautiful old Woodworth House did not have its marker on the outside. Maybe we can get some leads and add a couple more markers on a return trip, I am always hopeful! 😎
