Marker Text: One of World's most famous ships. Commissioned March 12, 1914, at Newport News, Va.; had part in 198 grand fleet search for German navy, World War I. 
       World War II service included 1943 bombardments off coasts of North Africa, 1944 D-Day assault on enermy in Normandy, and duty in Pacific fleet under command of Texas admiral Chester W. Nimitz. Her career over Texans gave the ship a berth at San Jacinto battleground in 1948 (1970)
