Marker Text: Schulenburg City Cemetery began as the Lyons Family Cemetery in 1834 with the burial of Clarissa C. Lyons, 39 years prior to the founding of Schulenburg. Clarissa's father, James, was also buried at the site after being killed by Comanche raiders in 1837. The Franz Russek family established a plot just east of the Lyons family plot, and was one of many subsequent families to utilize the site for burials. In 1879, Russek sold three acres for $150 to establish the Schulenburg City Cemetery, and additional property has been added in subsequent years. An association was established in 1894 and oversaw the cemetery until 1995, when it was placed under the direction of the city. Today the cemetery remains as a memorial to the early settlers of the area. (2009)
