Donley County Historical Markers
NUMBER OF MARKERS IN COUNTY- 18
Need - 4 Have- 14
The county seat is Clarendon, alos where this beautiful courthouse is located. The county is named for Stockton P. Donley a justice of the state supreme court.
As I talked about in Carson, at this stage in our trip we were heading home and not wandering too far off the beaten track in order to get every marker. However in Donley County the majority of the markers are in Clarendon or south of Clarendon and that was our direction home, so we managed to visit almost all available markers. There are now a couple of new ones Clarendon College and St. Stephen Baptist Church. I believe St. Mary's Catholic Church was there in 2012 but it was not listed in the atlas so we missed it. During our Panhandle trip it rained almost everyday for short but torrential bouts, it was however a gorgeous day as we started travelling home, unfortunately the dirt roads on the way to Boydstun Cemetery had large muddy puddles and it was as close as we had ever come to sliding into a corn field or getting seriously bogged. Anyway long story short Boydstun cemetery marker was not at the cemetery and I believe it is the naked pole that stands beside Jericho Cemetery marker (we did not actually visit Jericho Cemetery because of our previous narrow escape, it was also on a dirt road). |
The Texas Historical Commission atlas lists The Old Mobeetie Trail marker as not located and that was also our experience. There was one more that troubled us there was once a marker listed in the Texas Historical Commission atlas but has since been removed for the replica of the First Replica of Donley County Marker that we did not locate, even in 2012 it was listed as missing. It is somewhat unusual for a marker in town to be stolen so I have asked the Donley County Historical Commission for any information they may have and am awaiting response.
17th July, 2019 - I did get a response from Jean Stavenhagen at Donley County HIstorical Commission. She did not know anything about the Old Mobeetie Trail marker or even that it once had a marker. She could not think of a reason the a replica would have a historical marker and knew nothing about the a Replica of the Donley County Courthouse. The Boydstun Cemetery marker has been stolen twice, it did not sound like there were plans to replace it again.
