TEXAS HISTORICAL MARKERS

Runnels County Historical Markers

NUMBER OF MARKERS IN COUNTY- 63
Have -55  Need- 8
Picture
Named for Hiram G. Runnels, a Texas state legislator. County seat is Ballinger.
When we visited Runnels County we were attempting to get all the markers in this county. That unfortunately didn't happen. We ran into the old private property problem, some confusion and lack of patience on our part. We did also have some lucky breaks that allowed to get all but 8 of the markers at the time. Runnels county has over 15 ghost towns which means old settlements that are no longer in place and the markers are often not quite where Texas Historical Atlas has them located. We found the  Town of Marie this way and the also the Sweet Home School were we stumbled upon more by luck than design. As I am reviewing this county there were some annoying mistakes, Alec Simmons gravesite must have been very close to where we were, even through I believe the grave marker to be missing we should of at found the gravesite 🤔 . Steve lost patience with the Crews Cemetery - first grave, but it is there 😠 . The others we missed are on private property and will require some leg work and the right contacts so hopefully on the next visit we can complete the county.
