TEXAS HISTORICAL MARKERS

Erath County Historical Marker

NUMBER OF MARKERS IN COUNTY- 100
Have - 81   Need - 19
Picture
Erath County is named for George Bernard Erath a soldier of the Battle of San Jacinto and a surveyor. The County seat is Stephenville. Erath County is fun to drive around it is mostly rural and pretty. They have an active historical commission and add new markers annually in fact 11 markers have been erected since we were last there in 2012. There are four markers we have yet to visit and the challenge is that they are on private property. We were excited to find the marker for the Doublin Inn in the local museum and as a bonus they also had a Comanche County marker for The Choctaw Robinson as well which made me ridiculously excited. This is not an uncommon practice in rural counties, when buildings are razed such as the Doublin Inn they preserve the historical marker in the museum. Cathey Hartmann the historical director chairperson has been extremely helpful in answering questions and this local knowledge is indeed sometimes the only way to local some markers.

30th November, 2019 - On reviewing Erath County we still have many of the same issues, private property for three maybe four of the markers. I'm not sure a couple of new ones are up yet. Lastly the William Case House is mentioned in an old marker book but I can find absoluetly no information about it. So if you know anything about this house please contact us.
