TEXAS HISTORICAL MARKERS

Grimes County Historicals Markers

NUMBER OF MARKERS IN COUNTY -  92
Have-69  Need- 23
We have spend only a small amount of time in Grimes County always while staying in a neighboring county. So have only scratched the surface of what this county has to offer. I would love to spend at least one night in Navasota to explore some of the shops, restaurants and take a second look at some of the neat old houses.
Picture
21st March, 2020 - Named for Jesse Grimes, a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence. The county seat is Anderson. While Anderson is the county seat with the beautiful courthouse pictured to the left, Navasota is the bigger city and has more of the county's historical markers, most being for some of the gorgeous old houses.
I said above, I would like a chance really explore Navasota and that is still true. We visited the town on the way to Houston to visit Steve's parents, so it was a brief and purposeful trip with no chance to dine or peruse the stores. In fact, all of our visits to this county have been on the way to or from somewhere else.
On reviewing this county I know some of the markers we have left to capture will be difficult. Some are on rural private property if they are still standing at all. There is one in a completely different county that is not even particularly close. There are a couple that are duplicates by different names such as the Allen House is the same as Miss Sally Thompson School Building, this happens in the atlas from time to time. It is far easier to recognize when this happens in front of a computer at home than on the road when you are thinking they are two separate entities. The Jesse Youens house is missing its medallion and plate. The Sarah Bradley Dodson 27 x 42 was also missing when we were there. So we will see how many of the 23 we still have to capture we are able get as always I am hopeful for all of them.
