Tom Green County Historical Markers
NUMBER OF MARKERS IN COUNTY - 68
Have- 57 Need- 11

Named for Thomas Green a brigadier general in the Confederate army. County seat is San Angelo and by far where you will find most of the markers. I don't think I can write about Tom Green County without mentioning this was probably the hottest place I remember ever being in (I thought Bangkok was hot). Standing at Fort Concho it felt like the heat was coming up from the dry cracked ground as well as beating down from above, never was the margarita at Miss Hattie's Cafe and Saloon more welcome and appreciated than on this day. When it is this hot I feel we have less patience for any of the little difficulties the day may throw at us but saying that we did manage to get most of the markers.
Firstly I'd like to thanks Golda Foster chairperson of the Tom Green Historical Commission, who was very gracious in answering my many questions. All but one of the medallions at Fort Concho were removed and are in storage, I'm perplexed as to why they would do that, especially as they left one, but it is not the first time we have seen it. The marker for the Early City School was in storage at the courthouse when we were there, I am awaiting word to see if it has been reinstated. The Develin and Walsh both on the National register for Historic Places list do not actually have Texas historical markers though listed in the Texas Historical Commission atlas as having them, I believe this is just a data entry issue. The Maier House was moved onto a ranch? I'm unsure at this time as to its exact location. We could not work out how to access the Bismarck Farm but that may just of been because we just a little frazzled with the heat through I do believe it is on private property or at least you have to go through private property to get there. New markers have been added since our last visit so a return visit is needed.
