TEXAS HISTORICAL MARKERS

Houston County Historical Markers

NUMBER OF MARKERS IN COUNTY-260
 Have - 233 Need - 37
Picture
Houston County is named for (of course) Sam Houston. The county seat is Crockett.  Houston County is in east Texas, and for us what that means is rain, the only time we had to absolutely stop looking due to weather happened when we were in east Texas. The other part to this is that many of the back roads are dirt and the likelihood of getting stuck starts to become a real possibility, so planned routes are often changed or put off till next trip. We spend several days in a very cute bed and breakfast named Warfield House  in order to track down markers in and around Crockett.  Crockett is a neat town with a rich history and lots of great architecture and staying situated in the heart of Crockett allowed me to get out and walk around the town which is my preference rather than doing everything by car.  We always knew with Houston County that trying to capture all the markers would involve several trips and I believe we are coming up on visit number four. Firstly there are over 200 hundred markers, then our weather issues and thirdly there are several on private property that require more research to access. It is difficult for me at this stage of our relationship with Houston County to talk about missing markers because we still have at least a quarter so well over 50 markers to track down. I have reached out to Houston County Historical Commission and they confirm the marker entitled Site of Daniel Mclean Claim is missing and we certainly did not locate it when we looked for it. The Spinks -Mayes Building is listed as have a medallion & plate by the Texas Historical Commission but it is certainly not on the building the 18 x 28 is there, HCHC seemed surprised when I asked about it's existence. As I mentioned earlier we have another adventure planned in October and I may be able to talk with more authority about some of the missing or difficult markers.

06/01/2018 - We did go on our 2017 trip to Houston County and did pick a few more markers. Now the majority of what we have left are on private property and we will need some help finding owners to ask permission to access those. We had trouble locating the Allen Chapel Community, Randolph Community and Germany and even the coordinates we had did not help, so I have written to Houston County Historical Commission to see if they know anything. It did rain on this trip and just not in Houston County, and the dirt roads made me I feel like driving around this county we had been in the car much longer than we actually have been. There are a few that we simply haven't got to yet, either because they are newer like the Lovelady school site or have been inaccessible when we were there, or like Druso or we got turned around on the back roads and were way passed where we needed to be by the time we worked out where we were, which was surprisingly easy to do. John Long in Glenwood Cemetery should have a marker but it is missing his gravesite is in a state of disrepair. I believe even if we could get all the needed permissions it would take at least another full day to complete the Houston set, a challenge I am up for but will take some convincing on Steve's part.
