Named for Juan de Ugalde, who was the Spanish governor of Coahuila. County seat is Uvalde. I'm going to start by saying I love this part of Texas, I mean there has to be something special about a place with a town called Utopia, right? Well it seems like a lot of other people think so to because between when we first visited in 2006 and last year there has been a lot of development. In 2006 we stayed in the Sabinal River Resort, it was so nice to be surrounded by nature, hummingbirds were everywhere. I had just taken my NCLEX and the weekend was supposed to be the reward for all the hard work but even as I was laying in the room having a massage I was thinking I had failed and going through the questions in my mind, it wasn't till Monday that I found out that I had actually passed. The surroundings still worked their magic but I just wasn't as receptive I would have been normally.  The trip in 2017, we stayed in a little house that was quite cute in the middle of Utopia, unfortunately the owner did not leave the key so it took over an hour to get in, which left a little hot and flustered after a long day of marker hunting. Normally when staying in this area I think most people will want to be close to the Sabinal River, but on this occasion we had tickets to dinner at Saint Jo's Picnic which was family style dining under the stars, it was fun chatting with the locals. The menu was a mixture of Tex Mex and seafood,  Steve really enjoyed the Crab Queso and spinach oysters, I liked it all. I wish I had taken my camera as I'm not a big selfie taker and I was just enjoying the night and didn't really think of my phone, which is always a nice change. I'd love to do this again and this time of year would be perfect but I'm having trouble finding them on facebook now so I do hope they are still open. In the morning we had breakfast tacos from Taqueria Utopia which was recommended by the locals the night before and they were right they were delicious.  I still want to try the Laurel Tree in Utopia so there is always another excuse to go besides the missing markers of course. We tried to capture the Civilian Conservation Corps at Garner State Park  marker but and I have never seen anything quite like this in Texas the ticket I got to get to the counter was number 91 they were serving number 58 so we didn't wait the hours  it would have taken simply to capture the photo at this time. 😒

On to the markers Uvalde County has several old properties that have  posed problems firstly they are simply difficult to locate and secondly they require permission to access and if you only have the vaguest of directions it's hard to find out who the owner is to ask. So I am calling the Sabinal museum today to see if they can help. The museum itself through listed the Texas Historical Atlas as having a marker does not actual have one. The 18 x 28 Fort Inge marker has been missing for many years.  We have looked for the old post office many times without success, so hopefully the museum will know something about this also.
