TEXAS HISTORICAL MARKERS

Comal County Historical Markers

NUMBER MARKERS IN COUNTY - 142
Have-96  Need- 46

Comal County was named by early Spanish explorers to this region, Comal meaning flat dish in Spanish. The county seat is New Braunfels. We have been visiting Comal County since I first came to live in the States and I think I could happily live in this hill country county. We stayed in a Gruene Mansion cabin the weekend immigration lost the documents they had asked for and rescinded my work permit, I did the chicken dance at Wurst Fest while Steve looked at me like I was a little crazy, we spent one of my birthdays celebrating at the historic Faust Hotel and received a lovely surprise on arrival from my staff, of a gift card for the attached restaurant, we also stayed there when we saw Steely Dan in Selma. We had a family vacation with 17 of us and four generations in a great house on the Guadalupe River. I  went tubing for the first time on the Guadalupe. So, I have a lot of wonderful memories coming from time spent in Comal County. For me, New Braunfels retains a small town fee,l while being close to Austin and San Antonio. Unfortunately (at least I think it's unfortunate because I don't want it to change) a lot of people love Comal County too, it is at present the 6th fastest growing county in the nation.
The challenge with Comal Counties historical markers is private property and it makes sense as this is an old largely German settlement area with many historical properties being on acreage. What I really just need to do is sit down one day and start calling owners and asking permission to take a photo and see what we can access and then tell Steve we are going. Comal County has inventoried their historical markers themselves and this does help because at least you know the house still exists. Comal County Historical Commission is also extremely active and adds several new markers each year, so even though it has only been a few years since we last spent time there, we have many new markers to capture.
The Moeller House medallion & plate has been missing for many years, German pioneers in Texas was missing but has recently been rededicated.

29th June, 2019 - Not too much has changed since the last time I looked at Comal County except Comal County Historical Commission has been very busy they have added and approved many more historical markers. I do since need to make contact with property owners to try to add the old markers to this page but that takes time and it's a case of so many markers so little time. 😩

28th July, 2019 - I don't usually have cause to review counties so close together as I have this time. As you would suspect not too much has changed within a month. The reason for this review is because with had reason to pick up a few markers in Comal County on our way to San Antonio for an interview the next day, so we didn't have time for private property or in town markers on this trip. It did get us talking about taking a day and trying to contact at least a few of the property owners to take another stab at completing Comal County, there is no other county I can think of that has quite so many of these older hard to access historical properties than Comal County. I'd really try Gennaro's Trattoria in Canyon Lake so maybe we can just make a day of it. It is after all one of my favorite counties.

14th July, 2020 - So we briefly wandered into Comal County, just around the Fischer area grabbed three of the markers there. Of course Comal County has as usual been busy and plans to add five new markers that are listed below but not up yet. We have yet to attempt the many markers on private property.
