TEXAS HISTORICAL MARKERS

Wilson County Historical Markers

NUMBER OF MARKERS IN COUNTY- 64
Have- 59 Need- 5
Named for James Charles Wilson a state legislator. County seat is Floresville. Our first journey into Wilson was in 2006 and then again 2016 when we ran in a Floresville town fair, where the picture these girls on horses were taken. It finished our plans to capture the markers in Florevilles for that day because every man and his dog was there, parking and even driving became almost impossible but  that's what it's like living in the country. That is why when I heard about the shooting in Sutherland Springs  my heart broke for this small rural community, where everyone knows everyone and the whole town would be affected by this horrendous act of violence and loss.
Talking about the markers seems a little inconsequential but they are what this site  is all about. The marker for Fairview is missing broken off at the base. There are three on private property that we will need to ask permission to access I think the Beauregard marker may be missing. There are some new ones that may or may not be up. I have written to the Wilson County Historical Commission for answers.

26th October, 2018 - We paid another visit to Wilson County in June 2018 , concentrating on the Floresville area. It was a largely successful trip as far as makers.  We were sadly reminded of the tradegy that happened to this county after driving past the church site and I couldn't help but be aware of
how much this area of Texas was and still is impacted by the violence that happened while people were worshipping.
We had an excellcent lunch at Two Sawers. BBQ. The ribs were smoky and had exactly the right bite. We would definately visit again if in the area.
     About the markers.
Albert Kosub is on private property and we have yet to access.  I have been told the Charles Carl Winkler House has has been torn down but have yet to confirm. The Site of the Mission of las Cabrebas is on a private albe goverment site that allows limited access at specific times (not the time we were there). Wheeler Cemetery is on private property and we weren't sure the camry was up to the task. Beauregard Ranch marker is missing and has been for some time. Wilson County does not plan to reinstate at least not the original form. The Camp Ranch Community marker was not up in June 2018. The Fairview Marker is missing, when we visited all the remained was the pole.
