Williamson County Historical Markers
NUMBER OF MARKERS IN COUNTY - 264
Have - 251 Need - 11
Named for Robert McAlpine Williamson a veteran of the Battle of San Jacinto. County seat is Georgetown,
It's hard for me to know where to start to talk about Williamson County, it is the county we live in and thus have the most personal history with. It is also one of the first counties that we truly tried to complete the entire set and are still to the this day trying to achieve this goal. There have been many obstacles on the road working on this goal. The initial obstacle was that about half the markers were not listed in the atlas when we started, some we tripped over by luck rather than design, others we found on other sites. As the years passed the atlas added many of the missing markers there is at least one I can think of still missing. The list below is the most complete one that we could come up with and I am still not 100% sure of its accuracy. As this county contains much of the start of our "little" hobby, some of photos are not what I would like them to be and when given the chance we do retake them through the large and rapid growth in Williamson County makes driving around rather more cumbersome than it was when we captured them the first time round. One thing the growth has helped with is that some of the houses that were previously on private property and difficult to access, are now accessible. I going to address some our problem children individually because by now I feel like I have a personally relationship with the ones with have left to capture. The A.M. Brown Cabin is on the Garey property in Georgetown. The Gareys' donated this property to the city of Georgetown and completion of the park it is to become is slated for this year. The cabin is largely gone, all but the chimney the marker however in still on the chimney so we still have hopes of adding this one to the set. The Barbette Marker which is only a few miles from where we live was still not up, even though it has been listed in the atlas since 2015. I have contacted Williamson County Historic Commission to see if they know what is delaying this marker. Christ Lutheran Church was not up today (3/4/18) when we checked. David Hutchinson McFadin is a small pink granite grave marker it is in McFadin Cemetery, which is a small private cemetery and we have never been able to make contact with the owner into order to gain access, it is not listed in the atlas but it does exist. |
Easley-Sloan Historical Cemetery Marker does exist but is on private property, we have talked to the owner a couple time but either the weather or timing has been against on this one.
First Baptist Church in Taylor is up we just haven't got there yet. Same with Machu Cemetery. Lawrence Chapel Cemetery is missing and has been missing for many years. I have an old Texas Historic Commission book from the 1970's that lists the cemetery and Adam Lawrence as two separate markers, if this is true then they are both missing. The text I have reads like a grave marker for Adam Lawrence more the a marker for the cemetery, even though the Texas Historic Commission atlas only lists the cemetery with this text. Hall Ranch Home exists but I have never seen even a picture of the building with the medallion and am unsure who to contact for access. The Miss Laura Kuykendall marker is missing and Georgetown University has been unable to locate it despite looking. Citizens Memorial Cemetery as of today does not have a historical marker. Oliver Cemetery is a private cemetery and I have found no evidence to suggest that the marker is in place. Washington Bower marker is missing and the house is a state of disrepair. The Stage Coach Inn in Round Rock is just about to be moved and I hope saved but the marker has not been on the building for many years. The Dog Run Cabin from Liberty Hill may or may not be at Settlers Park in Round Rock, there is certainly a dog trot cabin there but it does not have a marker and now that I think about it the proprietor who told me it was the cabin in question seemed none too sure. I have never seen a picture of this cabin if indeed it is still in Liberty Hill which is a little unusual in itself because there are now quite a few people that also have this hobby and Williamson County has also done quite a lot of work to document the county's markers. Bartlett Electric Cooperative was in Williamson County when we took our picture of it but has since moved and is now Bell County so that is where I am going to display it. I am pleased that I finally got our pictures onto our site I feel more organized even if it doesn't change the challenges we still face to complete the Williamson County set. |
18th November, 2018 - As I have said before we live in Williamson County, so on the last marker trip we retook a couple of the older markers but have not captured any of the markers we are still missing. The Garey Park in Georgetown is now open so it might be time to see if the chimney for the Brown Cabin is still in place.
