Bell County Historical Markers
NUMBER OF MARKERS IN COUNTY - 245
Have - 233 need-12

Named for the third governor of Texas, Peter Hansborough Bell. County seat is Belton.
There are many little towns in Bell County so please don't think I'm ignoring them as almost everyone of them seems to have at least one marker, but for me when I think of Bell County my mind breaks the county into 4 major towns. This is how they are in my mind, Killeen is about Fort Hood, (in which gaining access may have scared us off other military installations for life) Belton is about Mary Hardin-Baylor University, Temple is all about Scott & White Hospital and Salado is a tourist town. (which I love). We did actually stay in Salado one night for the hell of it. in the very cute Inn at Salado I love being on the main street with shops, restaurants only a short walk away. Of course they each have many other elements this is purley what comes to my mind when I'm thinking about them. Bell County buts up to Williamson County where we live so we have had many trips to Bell County initially focusing on one of the above areas later to try and capture some of the ones we are missing as more information came to light. Joe and Dorothy Button, early members of the Bell County Historical Commission been our greatest asset on this journey, they have taken the time to answer all my questions even when my questions didn't always make sense. Unfortunately I believe Joe died last year I'm sure he will be greatly missed and his contribution to Bell County will be remembered.
Bell County has a robust historical commission and they add new markers every year, we have not visited in a couple of years and are missing 15 markers in new installations alone. This is what I know about the older markers we still need. Althea School has been missing for many, I have written to Bell County Historical Commission to see if there are any plans to replace it? The original Comanche Gap was stolen and I believe there already a replacement marker but am unsure if it has been installed yet. Daniel McKay and Donahoe Cemetery are in place and we even got so close we ended up in a cow pen surrounded by cows before deciding maybe the farmer wouldn't be pleased with us and slowly reversing out. The trouble on this one, is always where to park rather than access. The Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway Planning Mill is now accessible after many years in storage. Herrington Cemetery is on private property but I believe the owner will allow access. The John Robert Craddock grave marker is there on private property, we just didn't feel comfortable walking around the owners property without asking permission, and on the day we were there couldn't find anyone to ask. The Site of Childers-Shanklin Mill is a small centennial marker and it is there, but may take a little walking to get to (Steve is not fond of walking). Maruna Meadow is the one I know the least about, I believe it was once up on Orchard Road but got vandalized and the meadow owner took it down for safe keeping, so not exactly sure where it is now, that is if my facts are actually correct. Maxdale Bridge marker was missing and has been found just not sure if it has indeed been reinstated. Miller Springs Bridge is there its just a matter of access, you can get there, either walking through Miller Springs Park or gaining access through a gated neighborhood. Stokes-Nelson cemetery is a small private cemetery in the middle of a field, I believe the owners allow access but would rather be sure before traipsing out there. I have never seen a picture of this marker which is little unusual in itself. Summer's Mill marker was lost during a fire, part of the mill is still there but has had extensive renovation. The Wedemeyer House medallion & plate has been missing for years, I believe there are plans to replace it but I'm not sure if this has happened.
24th November, 2018 - We snuck into Bell County and captured the Boy Ranch of Copperas Cove but what is really required is a focused couple of days to try and add the 30 or so other markers that we still need.

22nd December, 2018 - This trip was just to take a couple of quick days away before all the madness of the Christmas season. This day went well we captured every one we went after except for Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway Planning Mill which is locked inside the old mill building, and was well and truely locked. It was all about the new markers on this day. Its great to knock these ones out, as Bell County adds new markers each year and itis sometimes hard to keep up but my heart is really about the old ones we have yet to capture either because they are on private property, locked away or required some waking. This would not have been the day to walk as the cedar already had me sniffling and sneezing. with 12 markers left every marker from here on in inches us closer to the complete Bell County set.
